Video-enabled visors seem to be all the rage these days and you’ll love the Vuzix iWear AV920 3D headset. This visor can connect to most video devices that have provisions for AV-out, and provide a virtual display that’s equivalent to a 62-inch screen viewed from 9 feet.

Freeware Application: FormatFactory - Multi Format Multimedia Converter

FormatFactory.jpg

Free media file converter FormatFactory is a handy all-in-one utility for taking one kind of audio, video, or picture file and converting it to another. The interface is a dead-simple drag-and-drop affair, and it’s meant for running batches of files through converters-FLVs to Windows Media, MPEGs to iPod-friendly video, DVDs to DivX files, etc. You won’t get a lot of options for quality control, compression rate, or other tweaks, but for some folks, that’s really a benefit. FormatFactory is a free download for Windows systems only.

Computing Application: Grab Video or Audio From Any Site with Tubemaster Plus

tubemaster-plus-screenshot-b.jpg

Free streaming media capture tool TubeMaster is a great all-in-one solution for grabbing and converting audio and video from nearly any web site that can stream it to you. The no-install app launches as its own application with a built-in, tabbed browser-simply launch it, head to Last.fm, YouTube, a site with proprietary Flash video, or nearly any other streaming media, and hit “Start Media Capture.” The files you grab are lined up in a queue for you to decide how to convert and save, and TubeMaster’s built-in media search tool covers nearly 100 video and audio-sharing sites. There are browser plug-ins and apps that do some of the same things, but none quite as comprehensively as TubeMaster Plus. TubeMaster Plus is a free download for Windows systems only; upgrading to a paid version unlocks downloads from adult sites.

Music Gadget: Sleek Audio SA6 Review

Sleek Audio’s Web site is peppered with reminders that it makes no sense to listen to your expensive MP3 player through a “$5 pair of earbuds.” I couldn’t agree more, and, at $249.99 list, the SA6 from Sleek Audio is certainly an upgrade! Sleek Audio, which started off as a hearing-aid manufacturer, takes an admirable step most companies don’t: The manual includes in-depth explanations of safe listening levels and hearing-loss risks. Also included with the earphones are treble and bass “tuning ports” that alter the audio output to suit different tastes and eardrums. These are not the most fantastic earphones I’ve heard, but for the price, they offer a customizable, fairly flat response. If you’re seeking a truly flat response, the best choice is either Etymotic’s $400 ER-4P or Ultimate Ears’ $900 custom-fit UE 10 Pro. If $250 is more what you had in mind, the SA6 can do battle with similarly priced Shure and Ultimate Ears models and is customizable in a way most earphones are not.
