Computing Gadget: Super Tiny Keyboard is Really Tiny

UKEYB001600_01_L.jpg

There comes a point when a keyboard is really too small to be of use for typing. I think that the Super Tiny Keyboard from Brando may have found that point. The keyboard is tiny (as its name implies) measuring in at 170 x 73 x 15mm. If you think a netbook has a keyboard that is too small, stay away from this thing.

Visually, it’s a dead ringer for the white Happy Hacking Lite keyboard, except for the black color and all. The Super Tiny Keyboard has 56 keys, Fn/Num lock change function, silent switch feeling (not sure what that means) and uses a retractable USB cable. I’m guessing that the silent switch feeling means the keys make no noise when in use. Brando should have made the thing wireless, at least then it would be an option for a media center keyboard. At least the price is tiny too at $25.

Internet Computing: Check Emails in Firefox Statusbar

webmailNotifier.pngDo you need to check email very often and find it very annoying to login to your mailbox each time just to do this?

Well another easy way to check your mail repeatedly is to use a desktop mail client like Windows Live Mail. However, if you keep surfing the web most of the time using Firefox, WebMail Notifier will do the job for you.

WebMail Notifier is a Firefox Extension which lets you check multiple email accounts simultaneously and it notify new unread emails right in the browser statusbar.

WebMail Notifier currently support GMail, Google Apps, Yahoo Mail (including Ymail.com & RocketMail.com), Hotmail (including Live.com & MSN.com), Daum.net, Naver.com, Empas.com and Nate.com, while FastMail, Orkut, Lycos Mail can also be configured using user script.

If you are well enough, you can also create userscript for your desired webmail provider. WebMail Notifier works with almost all Firefox versions.

For users with multiple email accounts, this is the dream Firefox extension. Give it a try, it will definitely help you increase your productivity and save time.

Freeware Computing: AnVir Task Manager Free

viewproccess.jpg

AnVir Task Manager Free is a Windows Task Manager replacement boasting an enormous feature set. This utility can manage startup applications, running applications, processes, services, and oh-so-much more. When you select a running process in the top pane, the bottom pane provides a wealth of information about the process, from a brief description of what it does to the network connections it’s making and DLLs it’s using. One of my favorite unusual features is the Check with AntiViruses on VirusTotal right-click option-which streamlines my favorite method of determining if a file really has a virus. You can find tons of Task Manager replacements out in the wild, but AnVir still manages to stand out. If you want even more functionality, this free download is also available in a Pro version with a kitchen sink full of features.

Internet Computing: Speed up browsing on low-speed connections with Toonel.net

toonel.gifIf you frequently find yourself browsing on a low-bandwidth connection, you can potentially speed up your browsing experience by using the compressing proxy server at Toonel.net. The concept is simple: install their application on your computer (versions are available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Sun Solaris, and even Windows Mobile and Symbian), then set your proxy settings to point to your localhost IP address on port 8080 (127.0.0.1:8080). Once you do, all of your web traffic is routed through Toonel.net’s server, which compresses it before it gets to you.

The compression used is lossless, which is required to ensure the pages show up as expected, though there are image-specific options that allow you to change the compression that is applied to JPEG and GIF images. This is likely only worthwhile on a very slow network, since it takes the server a bit of time to recompress images before your browser can download them, but could be handy on a struggling network.

I wouldn’t recommend running Toonel.net full-time, or even at all if you’re always on a broadband connection, but if you find yourself struggling with a lack of bandwidth, this is a great trick to have in your back pocket.
