It wasn’t his eyeball, You can clearly see that the drum part of the mallet was missing. Watch it and you will see. But it sure does look like his eye and it got me the first few times I watched it

definitely was the mallet. The mallets used for those large drums are wooden with a large cloth covered end. When they break they split along the axis of the stick, leaving a tapered shard (thinner at the top) that can stick into anything… i’ve thrown many of these into ceiling tile.
Watch the right hand… half the stick clearly remains in his hand, but it is missing the mallet end.

@Bonnie: The basic reason I conclude it was the eye, is because the thing is hanging from the eye hole, till the eye? looks like an optical nerve and not a mallet. It’s thinner at the top. Also, it looks elastic and not solid as a mallet.

Definitely wasn’t the mallet, it was wiggling – but I’m not so sure it was an eye either.

@Ryno: Are you sure about this? The kid is still holding the mallet with his left hand, after the incident.
On the other hand, if the mallet was simple broke and stuck in his cheek, why he didn’t just pull it out, instead of holding it?
These questions was on my mind when I first saw this video.

The title is incorrect. The xylophone player’s mallet broke, flipped up, and stuck in his cheek.

No loss of eyeball.

The thing hanging from his face is the broken mallet.
