The Gadgets of Summer

Looking for some high-tech diversions this season? Information Week presenting some cool gadgets for your summer. Here is the list of the gadgets I prefer most.

The summer’s supergadget–which as of this writing is slated to appear June 29–isn’t just one great gadget, but three: an innovative phone, the next step in iPod tech, and a handheld Wi-Fi device with the first truly creative approach to wireless e-mail since the BlackBerry. Summer may be over before you get one. Advance orders have been heavy, even at anticipated prices of $499 and $599.

How do you get high-quality audio underwater? It’s obvious–bone conduction. Finis’ SwiMP3 MP3 player clips to swim goggles so its transducers press against your cheek or other bones and let you listen to your favorite tunes underwater. The $199 MP3 player’s rechargeable battery and 256 Mbytes of memory provide four hours of music. It plays MP3 and WMA files and comes with software to manage your music.

I-mate’s Momento is a wireless digital picture frame that communicates with your PC and the Web. You can sort your pictures on your computer, then stream them to Momento. And the Momento Live Online subscription service lets you upload pictures from anywhere and send them to other Momento Live users. Frames run $199 for a 7-inch model and $299 for a 10.2-inch one.

If you’re connecting to the Web at a Wi-Fi hotspot from your laptop, why not make some calls? Because you forgot your headset and microphone? Time to get the Kensington Vo200, a Bluetooth handset that flips open for use, folds flat, and stores in your laptop’s PC slot, where it charges while docked. You need Bluetooth support or a Bluetooth adapter on a laptop, and $90 for the Vo200.

It’s just a toy, but what a great (and pricey) one. The $270 Brica ViewArt 1000 is a video recorder/player with TV input/output, a video camera, a PC Webcam, and a digital camera. Want more? It’s an MP3 player, audio recorder, FM radio, and e-book< reader. And it has four games. It records from a TV or DVD player to 320-by-240-pixel ASF files, and its camcorder function uses that format.

Price: $849
Don’t leave your PC behind. Install it in your car instead. HIPe PC’s Driv-N PCs let you browse the Web, play DVDs, and stay connected. You put the CPU under a seat or in the trunk and install the screen in your dash. It starts at $849 and comes with speech-recognition software for hands-free operation, and the power supply is designed to cope with low voltage and power spikes.
