Hercules - World Largest Dog

Amimals, Bizarre/Oddities

Hercules was recently awarded the honorable distinction of World’s Biggest Dog by Guinness World Records. Hercules is an English Mastiff and has a 38 inch neck and weighs 282 pounds.
With “paws the size of softballs” (reports the Boston Herald), the three-year-old monster is far larger and heavier than his breed’s standard 200lb. limit. Hercules owner Mr. Flynn says that Hercules weight is natural and not induced by a bizarre diet: “I fed him normal food and he just grew”…. and grew. and grew. and grew.

Snopes says it’s a hoax. Though it would be pretty cool, it lists Guiness’ actual biggest dogs

Hello there! I’m a certified Internet Ass-hole (email me if you would like to see my credentials), anyway im here to debunk this picture and tell you that it is completey fake here’s why: fist off as pointed out by my apprentice Darth Dartagnan, the leash is far too small for a dog that size. Secondly, who walks around with a horse and a dog, thats not a good look, you cant meet women that way, dont try it, 3rdly this guy couldnt open a jar of mayo let alone walk this dog and finally notice neither of them are actually paying any attention to the dog if i saw a dog the size of a car id be staring at him and slowly walking backwards and finally (thats 5thly if your counting) it seems that he has had this dog for quite a while seemingly since a puppy and the name Hercules is a little too ironic for me. Thanks for wasting you’re time reading this when you could be out doing something productive. until next time, stay classy.

Lol. Wonders if its a fake.

If you all look closely at the picture, it does not look to be a public place. It looks to be private property fenced in & probably out in the country. They are not looking at the dog because if they have raised the dog since he was a puppy, then you don’t need to stare at them to walk them. They probably do this everyday, or have some sort of routine that they follow. Mastiffs are good dogs & if you have ever been around one or had one you know that when they are that big, they are slow to get around & that they are not “wild animals” as some of you are seeming to portray. Why is it so hard to believe that there could be something as amazing as that adorable dog on earth? Just because he isn’t in the record book doesn’t mean anything. You have to call & submit yourself to be in it……
P.S. When you say finally the first time… we think you are done, so there is no need to be a smart ass & say ( 5thly) & then finally again because you don’t sound too bright! Reread your post!

Oh, one more thing. I have seen a 240 pound Mastiff in Ohio, so 40 more pounds is not hard to believe!!
May 12th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
That picture at snopes is chopped. There are tons of them in every Photoshop contest with a “super size” theme, and frankly they’re not all that difficult.
But for those who are not used to scrutinizing Photoshopped pictures…a mastiff at 280 lbs. would be seriously overweight, which the real Hercules, in the link Lizzy provided, clearly is. The snopes page shows a mastiff that is not overweight.

I once had a Mastiff that weighed about 225-230 lbs. It all depended on if you weighed him before or after he took a dump!
Anyways, I can believe a Mastiff has the potential of weighing in around 285, but the dog in the picture is way too large in comparison with the rest of the objects of the snap shot. If it wasn’t as tall I would believe it from the first look.
tat2girly, you are right about the Mastiff’s personality. I call them the “Gentle Giants”. My Mastiff thought he was a lap dog… he wouldn’t hurt a flea. But, my Gernam Sheppard on the other hand… well, that’s another story!

Ok people, it’s very easy …. look at the shadow of the “monster” ! it looks like the owner was really taking a chiuahaua for a walk. The body of the dog is completly out of depth…. yep it’s a good joke. Truth is that these beasts can go over 250 pounds !! So, I would not piss one off !!
May 25th, 2007 at 7:23 pm
I checked Guinness World Records website and there isn’t a “biggest dog”. In fact. there’s only a “tallest living dog” and it’s definetly not this one. Check it our for yourselves. I thought this was real at first, but now I’m not believing it.
May 25th, 2007 at 10:25 pm
The picture is in fact foto shopped, however, the real dog does exist. The link lizzy gave is correct, as far as I know.
As far as the certified internet a-hole? ahahaha! I bet you dress up as captain Picard too dont you?
The world is a funny place.

I do not wish to contend anyone or be a pain but I am a firm believer that if this were in fact a proper document than it would get the breed correctly atleast. This is not an English Mastiff, the english Mastiff is far finer in features and is mostly fawn… this is in fact an Neopolitan Mastiff which bears a striking resemblance to its cousin but can be found in the grey, the blue and the silver… the face, the ears and the way this dog carries itself is VERY much Neopolitan and NOT english. If I am in fact wrong and believe me you have nothing to prove to me I am merely expressing my opinion, then I would love to see proper documentation as far as breeding rights, etc. I do not doubt the size of this dog, I myself know a 220 pound Saint Bernard and why couldnt there be a bigger one… I am merely contending that this is official documentation for how could the Guinness book of world records publish incorrect facts… that would be pretty lame!

*Have you relised that nobody actually knows who these people are, maybe somebody should track them down and ask them whether is is a real dog.
*also have you noticed on the guys right hip there is a bit ofhis shirt missing this means this photo was obviously photoshoped
* There is 2 more photos of him one here http://www.blufftontoday.com/node/14078 and the back of hime here http://www.blufftontoday.com/node/13713 (its at the very bottom)
*For those people who thought it was wrong because there is a horse in the photo, it is obviously because they put the horse in as a good comparisen of size for the photo
* also why would this dog have the exact same stats as the other hercules that was in the guiness world record
* The weight is realistic a dog can be that heavy but the size of that dog looks way more than 282 pounds
there are lots of points for and against i’m still not fully sure whether it is true but i’m doughtingit
May 31st, 2007 at 8:58 am
oh yeah and for Ken who said it actually was in the guiness world records they could be lying. But it actually is in the guiness world record but for a different dog called hercules

From truthorfiction.com —
“The Truth:
Hercules, the massive English Mastiff, was real but his time in the limelight was in 2001 when he was the Guinness world record for the World’s Largest Dog. For some reason the story began circulating widely on the Internet in March, 2007, and was accompanied by a picture of an enormous dog being walked near a horse. That picture is not of Hercules because it’s a Neapolitan mastiff and Hercules is an English mastiff. Also, the picture appears to be fabricated. The dog is about half the size of the horse and an average horse is around 1,000 pounds.”

FAKE!!!! This is just photo shop at work. The shadowing on the dog indicates that the sun is at 2 or 3 o’clock. The man clearly does not have enough shadowing on his chest and left arm. And there is only one pic of this so-called giant dog shows its fake. If you had this dog, wouldn’t you take a ton of pics w/ it? Just know its fake, and stop being fooled by photo shop.

OMG I”M not poop and scooping after herc. !!!!
September 7th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
This is fake. It is obviously photo shopped because the dog is missing a piece from his right leg, and the owner part of his hip is missing, look carefully.
September 7th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
He’s an absolutely beautiful dog. I’m just glad I don’t have to pay for his food!

I have to agree, as much as I don’t want to that this picture is a fake. the obvious slip of the blending tool on the man’s waist is the first sigh and if you zoom in all the way at the dog’t head there is the tell tale blening ring on the left side of it’s head. I personally have had this pic in my collection for a while, but never took the time untill now to really look at it. it’s kind of depressing that it’s a fake. I SO wanted that dog. lol. But I have another pic in my collection that is just as impressive that I have scrutinized just as closely and it is most definately NOT a fake and the dog in the pic is the same breed and just as impressive in size, so they really DO get at least CLOSE to this size
