No, in this day and age, you don’t take a call in a classroom. That student deserved to get called out. Frankly, he’s not the only paying tuition to attend that class - he doesn’t get to distract everyone by taking a call. And it’s not professional, either.
If the call was that important, he should’ve left. It’s a courtesy. Essentially that teacher/professor extended the same courtesy that the student extended to the teacher/professor (re: none).
Bravo, professor, bravo. Shame on the student for a) not putting the phone on vibrate, b) answering the call and c) not leaving while talking on the phone.
If I’m caught speeding on the highway, the police do not incinerate my car.
If I wear a baseball hat in church, the pastor does not rip off the bill.
If I curse in the mall, the security guard does not cut out my tongue.
This situation could easily be fixed by the professor asking the student to leave, or by the professor confiscating the phone, or by the professor terminating the call. I am not excusing the student’s rudeness, but the theft and destruction of the property of an adult is most definitely illegal.

He should have asked the student to leave. There’s no excuse for acting like a five year old and throwing a temper tantrum in your own class.
