Ubuntu powers the Sun’s Fire T1000 & T2000 servers

Sun Microsystems Inc. and Canonical Ltd. announced that the new release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support), aka Dapper Drake, will be supporting the UltraSPARC T1 processor on Sun Fire T1000 and T2000 servers.

For Canonical, this represents a leap into the high-end datacenter server market. While Ubuntu is extremely popular with Linux enthusiasts and on the desktop, it has not been well known as either a commercial or server distribution.

Recently, however, Ubuntu, through Canonical, has been embracing the business world.

"Ubuntu is arguably one of the most important — if not the most important — GNU/Linux distribution on the planet and will soon blaze new trails in support for SPARC-based servers," said John Fowler, Sun's executive vice president of systems in a statement.

"There has been a vibrant community working with Ubuntu on SPARC for some time. Given the broadening of our offering from desktops to servers, and the power and promise of CoolThreads servers, official support for SPARC was a natural fit with our upcoming enterprise-ready release of Ubuntu 6.06 LTS," added Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu.

Fedora Frog brings the bling to Fedora

fedorafrog.jpgFedora Core 5 users now have a way to install and update games, productivity software, and multimedia support applications all at one time, much as Ubuntu users can do with Automatix. The script is called Fedora Frog, and it is available at EasyLinux.info.

Raivis Dejus, Linux Center project coordinator at the University of Latvia, runs EasyLinux.info. He finished Frog about a week ago, he says, adapting the Automatix script for the RPM-based Fedora Core and using yum to handle downloading and installing the packages. Dejus used his own ideas and some tips from others on the Internet to create Frog. "It seemed like a thing that had to be done," he says. "Ubuntu has Automatix and I decided that Fedora should have something similar."

Design a custom network install image with Instalinux

Built on LinuxCOE a powerful set of tools recently open sourced by Hewlett Packard, Instalinux makes installing Linux easier than ever.

Typically, installing Linux means donwloading (or buying) one or more ISO images, and then clicking through the install screens. In an effort to make Linux installs easier, some smart folks at HP developed LinuxCOE, where a user could choose some basic options through a web interface, and a small (30MB or less) ISO image is generated that can be used for a "hands-free" installation using either Kickstart, AutoYAST, or the Debian Preseed autoinstallers.

That code has been released as an Open Source project, and the installer component is now available through a free web site, Instalinux.
